Pilley’s Island NL

Pilley’s Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, is a community of about 300 on an island named the same. The island is connected by causeway and is found between Robert’s Arm and Triton on route 381 in Green Bay South.

History Tidbits: Current day Pilley’s Island gives little hint of its long history. A copper and pyrite mine that operated in the late 1800s and then from 1902 to 1908 created a very healthy local economy at the time. By 1899 it had a population of 700, six merchants and a hotel. It even had the courthouse for the area. (See a photo of the mine site here, hosted by MUN Digital Archives)
