The Red Leaf Centre is a centre for older adults (seniors) operated by a non-profit group in Springdale called Life Unlimited for Older Adults. The group organizes programs at the Red Leaf Centre, as well as activities at other locations in Springdale. They sometimes organize day excursions as well. Everything they do is for adults aged 50+.
Life Unlimited for Older Adults declares their goal to be:
“to engage older adults in planning and promoting social,
recreational, and educational activities to encourage healthy living.
Older adults are people who range in age from 50 to 100!”
Although based in Springdale, and under the support of the Town of Springdale, individuals from communities nearby are always welcome to join in.
What happens at the Red Leaf Centre?
Located in the basement of the Springdale Town Hall (the entrance is on the BMO-facing side), the Centre serves many functions. Birthday parties are sometimes held there. It is also an information centre. It has a small book library, as well as a popular puzzle library. A group of ladies gets together there on Friday morning to play games, and laugh a LOT. Also, on occasion, a speaker is brought in for a special session, on various topics of concern to older adults.
The group organizes exercise sessions under the name “Moving for Health”. These are held at Manual Hall in Springdale Stadium and are geared toward older adults. These sessions are free for ladies aged 50+, and happen every Tuesday and Thursday from 10-11am.
On occasion they organize group day excursions. In the past they have filled buses to do trips to Little Bay Islands, Long Island and Lewisporte.
They also host a movie night. The next one is on Thursday, January 26, 2016, at 6:30 p.m., at the Red Leaf Centre. Transportation from within Springdale is available. Participants must register by calling the Centre.
Volunteer Driver Program
A significant effort of Life Unlimited for Older Adults is in a volunteer driver program for older adults and for people with mobility issues. The program, called Care 2 Ride, has been in place for a few years now and the importance and benefit to the individuals who use it to get to appointments or social events cannot be understated.

Why Life Unlimited’s Work is Significant
Work like what is being accomplished by Life Unlimited for Older Adults in Springdale is timely and important. They could even be considered a bit ahead of their time. Newfoundland and Labrador has the fastest aging population in Canada and already in Green Bay we have populations in communities at about 30% aged 65+. Meeting the needs of this older population, and ensuring their quality of life matters. It will matter more in the very near future. This will very soon become a concern for all municipalities.
And, from another point of view, if the population across the area is at least 35% gray power, who will be having significant influence on the local economy and what services should exist here? They will. And Life Unlimited for Older Adults in Springdale is already listening to them.
