Phone Scam Targeted Deer Lake NL Hotel Guests

February 12, 2018 ~ This is something to keep in mind if spending a night in Deer lake before flying out or, in fact, spending a night anywhere.

RCMP in Deer Lake, NL, issued a warning today regarding a new type of phone scam, this time in the Deer Lake area.

The scam recently occurred at a Deer Lake area hotel.

An unknown person pretended to be the hotel’s front desk staff and called each guest room. The caller told guests there was a problem with their credit card being swiped and the front desk needed to re-enter their credit card information.

One person staying at the hotel gave the caller their credit card information. Soon after the guest was contacted by their bank and told an online purchase was made on their account from a business in the United States. No funds were lost.

The investigation is continuing.
