There may not be a lot of ice this year but the Canadian Coast Guard is wisely getting the word out that an icebreaker will soon be in Halls Bay.
The C.C.G.S. George R. Pearkes will be moving through Halls Bay into the Springdale area, leaving open water tracks, starting on February 25th, 2018
The Canadian Coast Guard pointed out there are risks related to icebreaking activities. They “cannot have absolute control on the behavior of the ice. Depending on various conditions, the ice can be pushed instead of broken and ice can crack or break far away from the location where the icebreaker is working.“
The public is warned to act accordingly to protect themselves and property.
