April 7, 2018 ~ The Canadian Coast Guard has announced that the icebreaker C.C.G.S Terry Fox will be moving into the King’s Point area, starting on April 8th.
The Coast Guard reminds the public that ice behaviour can be unpredictable during icebreaking activities.
From the Coast Guard PSA:
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE C.C.G.S. TERRY FOX WILL BE TRANSITTING INTO KING’S POINT. THEY WILL BE LEAVING OPEN WATER TRACKS IN THE ICE COMMENCING April 08TH, 2018
“CCG informs the local communities of the inherent risks of icebreaking activities. CCG cannot have absolute control on the behavior of the ice. Depending on various conditions, the ice can be pushed instead of broken and ice can crack or break far away from the location where the icebreaker is working. This can cause risks for the safety of people and property. The public is warned to act accordingly, i.e. refrain from walking on the ice; remove mobile equipment in advance of icebreaking activities; protect permanently non moveable property, for instance”.
